Lekau Sehoana – Drip Footwear, South Africa
January 3, 2022

Growing up in the dusty streets of Ivory Park, on the East Rand of Gauteng Province in South Africa, Lekau Sehoana used to walk to school barefoot on cold and hot day, enduring all the elements. Lekau grew up in a shack with his unemployed mother and his three siblings. Waking up in a shack with no electricity and having to study by candlelight. It is these experiences that helped shape his dream of being of assistance to children growing up with the same hardships that he had to endure.

Drip Footwear was established in 2019 with the idea of introducing a sneaker brand to South Africa. The brand quickly took off, becoming one of the most successful and fastest-growing sneaker brands in South Africa. With this he still had his dream of going back to his community and supporting children in need. When the COVID Pandemic hit the world, there was an instant need for children to do their schoolwork online. Ivory Park township, like many townships in South Africa, did not have any facilities for this. Lekau then went back to the same shack where he grew up and started renovating it to turn it into a free education centre, making it accessible to children in the area. Children now go there to have access to electricity and internet access to be able to do their school work. The dream has not ended there, Lekau is now extending the premises be able to accommodate more children. The centre will soon be launched and will be called DripED.

He has also made it his mission that no child in the Ivory Park area will ever have to experience going to school barefoot like he did. Every year, with the help of schools in the area, Lekau and Drip Footwear deliver hundreds of shoes to children in need.
Lekau is proud of his rags to riches story and says his background shaped him to be the businessman that he is today. In all of this, Lekau is also realising the dream of being a positive role model in a crime ridden area where role models are hard to come by.
