The Linda Sibiya Foundation Trust was founded by radio and TV legend, Linda ‘MR MAGIC’ Sibiya. The foundation started its operations in 2008 under the name ‘Linda Sibiya Bursary Foundation’. At that time, the main focus was to assist needy students with bursary funds.
The Linda Sibiya Foundation has worked on various initiatives and projects, including bursaries for deserving students, collecting shoes for school children, food parcels for the hungry, garden tools and seeds for the purpose of planting vegetable gardens at schools in poor areas amongst others.
Through the years the foundation has changed hundreds of lives through its various projects. The Foundation has issued 20 bursaries to needy students to study at University of KwaZulu Natal – Westville, 30 bursaries were issued to students at ICESA, 10 bursaries were issued to students enrolled to study at the University of Zululand.
In 2013 the foundation donated to the community of Eshowe. People were given food parcels, garden tools, ploughing seeds, etc. 11 schools were given school uniforms, shoes, stationery, school books and soccer kits. Donations were made to a local church – these donations were in the form of paint, bibles, hymn books, and tiling on the church floor. The Linda Sibiya Foundation Trust prides itself for producing journalists, photographers, teachers, entrepreneurs, and musicians.
South Africa has a very high youth unemployment rate – mainly due to the lack of employable skills among South African youth. The Linda Sibiya Foundation Trust has formed partnerships with various SETA accredited training providers to build skills centres in townships and rural areas. This will see the youth receiving opportunities to study one year courses and other short courses in various skills which are needed in their surrounding economic environment,
Future Plans: The foundation aims to multiply its reach over the next few years by duplicating past projects on a bigger scale, opening offices in all 9 provinces of South Africa, and doing CSI projects on a national scale. The foundation also wants to open a Disaster Relief Department to assist during natural disasters, which are happening more frequently in South Africa as a result of global warming.
Also on the cards is financing more students until they complete their degrees, teaching people to grow crops and finance vegetable garden projects which will ensure that even the poorest community never goes without food. Â The foundation would also like to invest in sports programs that will help the youth to build character and team ethics at a young age, introduce programs that will encourage the unemployed to be productive while looking for employment, inspire and train people to start small businesses and thus create jobs within poor communities.
